Is risk assessment related to workplace certification?

No, these are different procedures. Risk assessment is a European approach (ISO 45001, EU directives); it does not replace workplace certification and does not “follow” from it.

Risk assessment at workplaces

What it is
Workplace risk assessment is a systematic identification of hazards in each position, an assessment of the likelihood and severity of consequences, a plan of corrective actions and an assessment of the residual risk after them. Simply put, we show where the real danger is in the workplace and what to do to reduce it - according to the European methodology.
Who orders
Most often, risk assessments are ordered by companies with foreign headquarters: at the request of the head office, during an investment assessment or before an audit by an insurance company or investment fund. It is often included in occupational safety outsourcing - for European clients by default - or in audit if you want it. Suitable for companies operating according to international occupational safety standards.
How we work
We work as a team of engineers using the Racio Safety Standard methodology, aligned with ISO 45001 and EU directives. We start by going out and observing real work, not from a template: we identify the hazards of each position - physical, chemical, biological, ergonomic, psychosocial, as well as wartime risks. The output is a risk assessment map for each position: hazards, "probability × severity", precautions (collective + PPE), corrective actions and residual risk.

Types of risks according to modern methodology

A full risk assessment covers five categories of hazards, and in Ukrainian realities, wartime risks as well. A common mistake is to limit yourself to only physical and chemical factors.

A common mistake is to only assess physical and chemical factors, while omitting biological, ergonomic, and psychosocial factors. For a call center, psychosocial risks will be the main ones; for IT, ergonomic risks. If they are not included in the map, the assessment is incomplete and does not meet international standards.

Physical
Noise, vibration, lighting, microclimate (temperature, humidity), electromagnetic fields, ionizing radiation. A classic set of physical factors of the working environment.
Chemical
Gases, vapors, dust, aerosols, solvents. They require measurement in the work area - mandatory for production, usually ignored in offices, but may still be relevant (copiers, printers, glue, detergents in retail).
Biological
Bacteria, viruses, fungi. Critical for medical centers, laboratories, food industry, waste collection services.
Ergonomic
Static postures (sitting), repetitive movements, awkward working postures, heavy lifting. The main risk category for IT teams and offices. Addressed through ergonomics training.
Psychosocial
Stress, burnout, overload, conflicts, mobbing. For white-collar work, often the main category, but the least documented. Addressed through occupational safety training.
